Natural silk is obtained from the cocoons of the silkworm. Chinese silk has been known for many thousands of years and in the past was a valuable commodity imported from the Far East. Up to 4 km of very fine fiber is obtained from one cocoon, which is then processed into silk yarn. Silk fabrics are among the most expensive fabrics in the textile industry.
