The first recorded instance of a two-piece bathing suit being worn by a woman was in 1907 when Australian swimmer Annette Kellerman was photographed wearing one in Boston Common. The suit consisted of fitted shorts and a long-sleeved top with buttons down the front. This style would later become known as a “tankini”. While this may seem tame by today’s standards, back then it caused quite a stir! Many people were outraged by her display of skin and she was even arrested for indecency (though she was later released).
It wasn’t until 1946 that French designer Louis Réard created what we now think of as the modern day bikini . He named it after Bikini Atoll in the Pacific Ocean where nuclear weapons testing had just taken place (talk about bad timing!). His design featured high cut bottoms and triangle shaped tops which left very little to imagination – something that was unheardof at the time. American actress Marilyn Monroe helped to make his creation famous when she wore it in film. While some countries embracedthe new style, others were far less forgiving – several European nations banned its use on public beaches altogether. France itself only lifted its ban inthe early 1960′ s!
