Both huacaya and suri alpacas can be shorn once a year to yield about 2–3 kg of usable wool per animal annually. The alpaca’s coat grows in two layers. The coarse outer guard hair, which repels water and dirt, and the softer undercoat, which is made up of finer fibers. It’s the undercoat fiber that is harvested to make alpaca wool yarns and fabrics. Most commercial breeding programs focus on Huacaya alpacas because their fleeces are more desirable for spinning into yarn. Alpaca wool is similar to sheep’s wool in terms of its protein structure, but it lacks the lanolin that makes sheep’s wool itch when worn next to the skin. This makes alpaca wool garments much more comfortable to wear than those made from traditional sheep’s Wool fibers can be blended with other fibers such as cotton or silk to create fabrics with different properties.
