The Alpaca wool is derived from the domesticated South American alpaca llama. Compared to classic sheep wool, it is softer, warmer and softer. A baby alpaca is called a cria (pronounced "kree-uh"). Suri alpacas were nearly extinct at one time but their numbers have increased due largely to improved breeding practices. The softness of alpaca fiber rivals that of cashmere yet it is also strong and durable. It insulates well against both heat and cold making it ideal for sweaters, hats, gloves and scarves – perfect winter wear! And because it wicks moisture away from the skin so effectively, it is also excellent for summer garments such as light weight shirts and yoga pants.
