Alpaca wool is derived from the domesticated South American alpaca llama. Compared to classic sheep wool, it is softer, warmer and softer. A baby alpaca is called a cria (pronounced "kree-uh"). Suri alpacas were nearly extinct at one time but their numbers have increased due largely to improved breeding practices.
